  • Finnish Union of University Professors

    The Finnish Union of University Professors (FUUP) is a labour market organisation which also serves as a channel for common professional interests of its members.

    Membership in the Union is open to persons who are permanently or temporarily holding professor´s post at Finnish universities or corresponding positions at research institution.

    The Union furthers financial, social and other employ-ment-related interests of its members. It also seeks to sustain and enhance the status and high esteem of its members and advance their professional and scientific endeavours. lt also concludes labour contracts and collective bargaining agreements on behalf of its members.

    The Union promotes mea-sures to improve the conditions for scientific research and higher education and forwards interactivity between the research community and the society as a whole.

    Organisation of the Finnish Union of University Professors

    General Meeting of the Union is held once every two years to elect the Union Council.

    The Union Council is responsible for drawing the guidelines for the Union's activities and finances management. The Council elects the Union Board, which is vested with the highest executive authority for the Union and is assisted in this task by permanent staff of the Union.

    The Chapters of the Finnish Union of University Professors

    The Union is divided into university-based local chapters to carry out its internal activities. The professors working at state research institutes constitute a chapter of their own.

    Cooperation with Other Institutions

    The Union is a member of AKAVA, the Central Organisation of Professional Associations in Finland. The Union has dual membership agreements with a number of other member organisations of AKAVA to safeguard the interests of its members in employ-ment-related and other matters.

    The Union has also cooperation agreement with the Finnish Union of University Researchers and Teachers (FUURT). The agreement covers issues relating to labour market, university and science policy and information services. Together with the Finnish Union of University Lecturers, the two unions publish the magazine Acatiimi.

    Professors

    Professors are the researchers and teachers at the highest level at Finnish universities. They are a clearly identifiable group within the university administration. There are more than 2000 of them.

    The qualications required for the post of a professor include 1) scientific (artistic) qualifications, 2) teaching qualications and 3) practical work experience. Professors are appointed through a specific procedure by legislation.

    The duties of professors at universities involve teaching, research and research management at the highest level, and various administrative and social functions service functions. The annual computational working time of a professor is 1600 hours.

    The professors belong to three goverment salary categories: A30, A29 and A28. In addition, various increments
    are also paid. The average monthly salary of a professor is c. FIM 24,000.

    The functions of the professors at research institutes differ from those of the other professors to a degree.
